What is 4-H?
Projects
Learn by doing…
In 4-H, almost any interest you have can be a hands-on project.
Take pictures! Build rockets! Learn to sew! Plant a garden! Train
your dog! Learn leadership! The possibilities are more than you
can imagine.
Youth ages 5-19 years old can participate in more than 50 program
areas through 4-H.
4-H Slogan
“Learn by Doing”
4-H Emblem
The 4-H emblem is the four-leaf clover with the letter “H”
on each leaf, standing for head, heart, hands and health. The 4-H
colors are green and white.
4-H Clubs
4-H Clubs are informal, practical, fun environments for youth to
learn public speaking and leadership skills as they gain knowledge
in a project area of their choice. 4-H Clubs are lead by the youth
with the assistance of a volunteer club leader. They meet in various
locations from individual homes, to libraries, to community centers
and schools.4-H provides research based, developmentally appropriate
curriculum for adults to teach youth specific projects and life
skills such as citizenship, communication skills, public speaking,
leadership, teamwork and responsibility.
Skills
That last a lifetime…
4-H teaches skills that will help you throughout your life. Club
participation, projects and friendships are other memorable parts
of the 4-H program. You will have the opportunity to give project
talks, attend camps with other kids your age and develop the basic
life skills that 4-H hopes to instill in its 4-H members:
| A positive self-concept. |
An inquiring mind. |
|
A concern for the community. |
Healthy interpersonal relationships. |
| Sound decision making. |
Record keeping skills. |
4-H is a Family Affair
Parents and grandparents are encouraged to take an active role
in their children’s 4-H work by attending meetings and activities,
and supporting the kids’ project work at home.
Awards and scholarships are available for project work, camps,
special recognition and even college!
